中国共产党成立初期的1921年秋天，毛泽东来到江西萍乡安源煤矿，借找工作之名来到矿井下干活，结识了长期受尽欺凌、怨声载道的路矿工人。可是向来逆来顺受的工人们不敢与洋矿主、土监工们作斗争。毛泽东相信众人拾柴火焰高，与李立三决定将“安源这锅冷水烧热”。首先他们拜访了矿长林之轩，以兴办平民教育为理由，开办了安源路矿工人夜校，很快就发展了几名党员和200多个积极分子。刚刚从俄国学成归来的刘少奇，也马上加入到安源的工人运动中来。三个年轻的无产阶级革命家，凭借着自己的信念、理想与激情，先后在安源开办了工人俱乐部、矿工合作社和剧社，鼓励工人们要依靠自己的力量、堂堂正正地做人，同时筹划着罢工运动。资本家和洋买办们意识到矿工们越来越团结，为了削弱工人俱乐部的影响，以萍乡县公署的名义发布了取缔俱乐部的训令，毛泽东、李立三、刘少奇决动提前罢工。1922年9月14日，以李立三任总指挥、刘少奇任矿工全权代表的安源路矿工人总罢工开始了。随之长沙、湘北、湘南等地的工人罢工运动也如火如荼地展开。在湖南省长办公室，毛泽东义正辞严地为工人们争取劳动保障等权利；而在安源这里，刘少奇带着17个复工条件与资本家们谈判。内外压力下，资本们家终于答应了工人的条件，安源路矿工人总罢工在未伤一人的情况下，取得了全面的胜利，成为中国工运史上具有里程碑意义的一次运动。
